Saving Your Teeth from the Inside Out
Endodontics focus on caring for the soft tissue in the tooth’s inner chamber, known as the pulp. While tooth enamel usually protects this area, an untreated cavity or sudden injury could damage the pulp, leading to infection and severe pain. Without swift and adequate care, the tooth would most likely need to be extracted.
Endodontics provides an alternative by treating the inner chamber itself, most often through root canal therapy (RTC). This procedure may sound unpleasant, but today’s dental advances make RTC highly successful while providing minimal discomfort to the patient. Preserving the tooth with this therapy lets you enjoy good oral health longer, and prevents the need for costly tooth replacement.
Identifying and Treating with Endodontics
Spotting severe tooth decay and quickly addressing it is crucial in trying to preserve the tooth. Contact our office if you experience any of these symptoms:
- Severe or persistent tooth pain
- Sensitivity to pressure or temperature
- Swelling, tenderness or bleeding in the surrounding gums
- An abscess in the gums
It’s also possible for a tooth infection to occur without presenting symptoms, which makes it more important to maintain your regular checkups.
A thorough exam will determine if root canal therapy is needed. During the procedure, a local anesthetic is applied to maximize patient comfort. If you experience dental anxiety, conscious sedation through nitrous oxide is available at our Providence and Smithfield locations.
Once the infected tissue is removed, the tooth is filled and capped with a crown to protect it. The tooth pain disappears shortly after the procedure, and RCT features a short healing time.
